Welcome to Disciples in Education!

Let me begin by applauding everyone whose signature block proudly bears academic degree abbreviations—Ph.D., Ed.D., M.Ed., B.S., A.A., J.D., Th.D. These abbreviations matter! Earning a degree requires dedication, discipline, and perseverance—as it should. I have one more to complete as I approach the strategic age of 60.

A bit of my testimony: I marvel at the timing of God. Twenty-five years after earning my bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California, Davis, He called me back to school. I still remember skipping off campus after my last final exam, fully convinced I would never set foot on another campus as a student. But when I gave God my “YES,” everything changed. There was no turning back—Education Leadership, here I come!

The next round of professors proved to be mission essential. As I navigated the master’s program—significantly shaped by the emerging phenomenon of online learning—I also began to spiritually discern the parched culture and climate within educational institutions, among teachers and students alike… including those on Christian campuses.

So there I was—walking the halls of international, private, DODEA (Department of Defense Education Activity), charter, and, finally, public schools.

Like Ezekiel, I faced a question that pierced my spirit: “Can these dry grounds live?”

With a resounding YES, I echoed the words of Caleb: “Let us go up at once and possess it, for we are well able to overcome it” (Numbers 13:30). From Regent University to Columbia International University, my journey in education leadership became a path paved with blessings, encouragement, and, at times, bold conviction. I was astonished that some of God’s people could not see what I saw. Spiritually blind, they could not perceive; spiritually deaf, they could not hear. My only prayer was, “Lord, have mercy.”

God made it clear: my future would not involve a traditional classroom. Instead, I would be called to welcome and equip educators and paraprofessionals—individuals who should be able to effortlessly analyze, compute, decipher, collaborate, read, write, and research at various levels.

But there was one major problem: these abilities were diminishing—not only among students, but also among educators. Why? Christian educators had come to rely far too heavily on the wisdom of man rather than the wisdom of God. Yikes.

God also revealed this truth: dismantling the strongholds that plague our nation’s classrooms, schools, and districts will require nothing less than the wisdom of God, the name of Jesus, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Period.

Disciples in Education is not merely here to turn public schools around—it is here to turn them upside down. Turning around only takes us back to where we have been, and for many, that past contradicts the truth of God’s Word. As the Apostle Paul writes, “One thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead” (Philippians 3:13).

What lies ahead? A divine partnership with God, the dismantling of destructive educational pipelines, a greater outpouring of His wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, and the mighty power of God breathing life into renewed approaches to education—all within the bounds of the law.

Disciples in Education exists to restore Christ-centered conversations in schools, returning educators to the God of the Bible: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. For believers, you’re being invited to legally return to a former way of conversation that should have never departed from our hearts and lips as members of the body of Christ. Those daily conversations include testimonials, praises, and songs that flow daily, reflecting the faith and mission of the body of Christ. Using Biblical examples from the Old Testament and the New Testament, disciples will conduct their classrooms under the instruction of the Holy Spirit.

For the faithful remnant who have been holding God’s charge within your school or district, take heart— God is sending you some help.  For those of you who don’t understand my written babble, we welcome you to get on board with an “aha” moment from Jesus himself: "With man this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

Let’s go!
