Heads Up for Christian Teens
- Kerry Nguyen
Not so long ago I was in a very toxic friendship with this girl. She made me feel bad and made me cry multiple times. Like, she said I dressed weirdly and should wax my eyebrows. Then she was always, like, insulting me in a way that made it seem like I deserved it.
Heads Up: Learn God’s idea of friendship.
A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need–
Proverbs 17:17
Heads Up: Be a hearer and doer of God’s word.
Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers
Psalm 1:1
She would comment about things that she already knew I felt bad about. She lied to me a lot and made my other friends do things to me to make me feel bad. I really cared about her so I just did everything she wanted for her to like me.
Heads Up: Pay attention to the fruits of others.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you
Matthew 5:44
She made me do things I didn't want to do and said if I didn't do it I was fake and would stop being friends with me. I tried to do everything to fit in but it was never enough. She said she would never invite me to her birthday party because I was annoying and nobody liked me. I was so sad when I was her “friend” and we stopped being friends multiple times but then she would say, “Oh my gosh! I was just joking.”
Heads Up: You can pray from a distance.
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers.
Psalm 1:1
So one day I tried to stop being her friend but then she said she would tell one of my biggest secrets, I stayed. Until I was so done. I said, “I am done with you. Do whatever you want. I hope you have a great life but we are no longer friends. I care about you but it is too much for me so bye.”
Heads Up: The Lord will fight your battles.
The Lord sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground.
Psalm 147:6
I left it like that because I didn't want to tell her anything mean or rude. I just left it alone because if I said something mean, I would be like her. I was not going to do that. Instead, I had the opportunity to keep God’s word:
Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
1 Peter 3:9
